How to Align Hands On Learning with Business Objectives – A Closer Look

Your company depends on human resources to work, and there are many different HR business objectives that your HR employees work towards every single day.  However, the HR world is constantly changing and evolving.  Whether it's shifting HR business objectives or the addition of new technology, your workers have to learn and evolve along with the company and the business environment.  But learning takes time and effort, and many companies worry that educating their employees will make it more difficult to reach those HR business objectives as needed. 

That fact makes it tough to will yourself into educating your workers, no matter how important it is to do so.  However, taking a closer look at why it's important to educate and how to do so while working towards the HR business objectives you've set will help you see your options more clearly and determine just how to align hands on learning with your HR business objectives.  Learning doesn't mean ignoring your objectives, and a couple of basic strategies exist.

  • First of all, consider that you've probably got multiple HR workers.  If need be, you can certainly opt to alternate their hands on learning.  Allow some of the employees to continue their regular work, maintaining your current business strategy and working towards your HR business objectives while the remainder learn the new skills needed.  Then, alternate the two groups until all of your HR workers are ready to lead the company forwards towards the HR business objectives you've set, armed with their newfound skills and knowledge.
  • You can also implement learning as a way of moving towards HR business objectives.  This is often a better strategy and one that is far more rewarding.  You'll need to assess your HR business objectives and determine what skills are needed, then let your employees begin their education.  If you're switching to a new HRMS, for instance, then your employees can learn how to use it while actually using it, or let a professional demonstrate its use and teach your employees while actually setting it up, working towards your HR business objectives while still teaching your employees.
  • Retreats and learning centers may be the best way to move your company forward, but you don't have to ignore HR business objectives to do so.  Choose educational retreats that not only teach basic skills, but far reaching ones that will lead your company to the HR business objectives. 

There's no way to overstate the importance of continued education, and it's vital for reaching your HR business objectives.  But if you're careful and clever, there's no reason that you should have to choose one over the other.  Take a close look at your options, and education as well as your HR business objectives will be easier to attain than you likely realize.
