How to Align Hands On Learning With Business Objectives – Easier than you Think

Human resources are vital for any company, no matter the size.  That's why it's so important that you ensure your HR department is the very best that it can be.  But often, learning new skills and abilities means putting HR business objectives on the back burner.  But when you're facing a fast-paced marketplace and upcoming deadlines, you may need to combine hands on learning with current HR business objectives to ensure that everything is met.  Whether your employees need new skills just to meet current HR business objectives or if you're just planning ahead, it's very important to align these two fundamental aspects of human resources.  Luckily, it's also a bit easier to do than you may suspect. 

The first thing you need to realize is that while learning is best done in hands on manners, that doesn't meant that it can't be done while working towards HR business objectives.  Here's a quick rundown of just how you can go about accomplishing both at the same time.

  • First of all, assess just what your HR business objectives are.  Look not only at short term, immediate HR business objectives but also at the bigger picture.  You can even look at the future years down the road to get a clearer idea of just what your company's HR business objectives.

  • The next step is simply to figure out how to teach your employees those new skills while still working towards the HR business objectives.  In the case of adding a new payroll or Cloud based system, for instance, you can actually help the employees learn by doing.  A good idea may be to outsource a trainer to come in and help teach the HR department the new skills while actually working on them.  In other words, instead of exercising their new skills in a classroom setting they'll be using them to move the company forward towards the HR business objectives you set.  With the right supervision, risks of errors are small and your workers will be learning while moving towards the HR business objectives that you're trying to reach.
  • Once this is done, you'll be ready to reassess the situation.  Are you moving towards your HR business objectives as planned?  Do some of your employees still seem to need more training?  Ask yourself these questions and you'll be able to figure out exactly what the next step will be.
