Employee onboarding is a relatively new term that describes an age-old situation – the acclimatization of new employees into your working environment.   1. Devote Yourself to Them – The initial orientation process is a vital part of employee onboarding and must be handled properly in order to be successful. When you're orienting new employees they need to feel that you actually care about bringing them onto the team. That means don't answer your phone in the middle of employee onboarding or get otherwise distracted. They're a part of your team and you need to make them feel as such.
  1. Stick to the Plan – If you hired an employee for a specific job and change their duties on their first day, you're ruining the employee onboarding process before it begins. Trust means a lot in the business world, and misrepresenting their duties when you hire them breaks that trust.
  1. Get the Paperwork Out of the Way – Have all of the necessary documents ready at the beginning of the employee onboarding process so that they can be completed and finished. Once they're out of the way other issues can be focused on.
  1. Eliminate Confusion – Confusion is the enemy of employee onboarding so take the time to draw up a checklist or plan that explains just what an employee's duties and responsibilities will be. This simplifies employee onboarding and lets them know what they'll be doing.

  1. Be Prepared – Ensure that the employee's workstation is fully stocked and ready for them to arrive. Have all email or phone accounts set up and ready to go so that the employee onboarding goes off without a hitch.
  1. Downtime Matters Too – The first day can be stressful during employee onboarding, so be sure that you schedule a bit of informal time for them during the day. Organizing a lunch with some coworkers is a great way to relieve stress during employee onboarding.
  1. Represent the Company – Be sure the new employee has the company guidebook in hand during the employee onboarding. This avoids confusion about protocol, dress codes, and other issues that could be missed during employee onboarding.
  1. Check In – After the initial employee onboarding, take the time to follow up one month later and then three months later. This ensures that the employee has moved beyond employee onboarding and become a member of the team.
